Legislative leaders called this meeting to see what needs existed for the employees impacted by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. They solicited input from the group so that they could learn what could be done and what they could do to help.
I hope you all are doing as well as you can be. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with all of you. I am writing to provide you with an update on what has happened and what is happening regarding teacher and district support since the events of 12/14/12.
U.S. Rep. DeLauro Reads Newtown Teachers' Letter at Gun Violence Prevention Hearing
At the Jan. 16 House hearing on gun violence prevention, U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro read into the record our letter to the committee.
"We have seen a tremendous amount of support from Congresswoman DeLauro and other public officials," said Tom Kuroski, president of Newtown Federation of Teachers. "Submitting this letter to Congress is just one of the many steps we are taking to ensure that the voices of our teachers are heard as we move forward to improve the safety of our schools and the students we teach."
The National Education Association brought in the Ohio Education Association Crisis Response Team to speak with Newtown teachers and other AFT members. Our local will be working to bring them back as AFT Connecticut develops a team of trained peer grief counselors.
